Joan Allen plays Senator Hansen, the President's (Jeff Bridges) selected candidate to replace the recently deceased Vice President. Gary Oldman plays Senator Runyan, the Chair of the Nominating Committee in Congress, who is determined to "obliterate" her in the hearings. He digs up a racy story from her past and uses it for all he can to destroy her.
